VanWonen and Van Grunsven to realise Mandelatoren Arnhem

News item, Area and Property Development

Last Wednesday afternoon, area developer VanWonen and construction company Van Grunsven signed a partnership agreement for the construction of the Mandelatoren in Arnhem. The iconic residential tower was designed by Powerhouse Company and will feature 95 rental apartments spread over 15 floors. The Mandela Tower will arise next to the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Malburgen-West.

Iconic living in Arnhem
In its prominent location on the bank of the river Rhine, the Mandela Tower marks the start of the new housing development along the Rijndijk in Arnhem. An iconic tower, nestled in greenery, with a distinctive appearance. The tower will house a total of 95 apartments, ranging in size from 50 to 120 m2. Each apartment has a balcony, overlooking either the city or the lush green landscape. The staggered balconies give the building a unique appearance. The car park under the complex will provide space for 101 cars.

Mireille Jeurnink, VanWonen’s Director of Property Development: “I’m proud of the inclusive housing programme that we will realise in the Mandela Tower. From social housing to the expensive rental segment. And with enough space to meet others and socialise, in a beautifully designed building.”

Diamond-shaped building
The architecture is a striking eye-catcher. The diamond-shaped building has a slender silhouette and a playful façade. As such, the building has a unique appearance from all sides. It connects with its surroundings in a natural way. The entrance with its bicycle parking facility is easily accessible. And the Mandela Tower is just a five-minute bicycle ride from the city centre of Arnhem.

A focus on climate and biodiversity
The building is equipped with plenty of smart solutions, making it a healthy, energy-efficient, and pleasant place to live. Each apartment is gas-free, the area is lush and green, and there is plenty of space for bicycles. Cars remain out of sight on the parking deck and in the underground car park. Biodiversity is incorporated into the design: the façades will accommodate nesting boxes for swifts, house sparrows, and bats. For peregrine falcons, a box will be placed on the roof.
Francis van Haren, Commercial Director at Van Grunsven Groep: “As a regional construction and development company, we look forward to realising this exceptionally beautiful tower together with VanWonen, at a splendid location with high visibility in Arnhem. We have focused on maximising the sustainability of our materials. The bricks, for example, come from Gendt, at less than 10 kilometres from the building location.”

Planning
Construction is expected to start by the end of October 2022. The building’s completion is expected to be in 2024.
