De Kroon in Groningen

Project update

In recent years, the neighbourhood Ebbingekwartier has started to emerge on the edge of Groningen’s bustling city centre. With the apartment building De Kroon (‘the Crown’), the completion of this transformation project on the Boterdiepgarage, developed by area developer VanWonen, is in sight. Of course, nothing tops Groningen according to our colleague Marjolein Jongerius, Sales Manager: “Urban living in a historic location, that’s De Kroon. The building features 31 apartments in a wide range that appeals to people looking for a home. Currently, one penthouse is still available; it marks the last chance to live in this popular and vibrant neighbourhood.”

Ebbingekwartier has long been known under the name CiBoGa, the Circus, Boden and Gas grounds. In 1854, a gasworks complex was built on the site. With the discovery of the natural gas field in Groningen, the gasworks were no longer needed and in 1962 a large part of the plant was demolished. The site was transformed into the vibrant neighbourhood it is today, with rich historical references in the architectural design, at a unique location in Groningen’s city centre.

Groningen bricks

The architecture of the De Kroon complex is a nod towards the rich and industrial past. The typical Groningen red and orange bricks that were common at the time served as the inspiration for this building. The façade consists of three towers of unequal height placed against each other. The right section with its built-in loggias refers to buildings with a grey concrete structure and with masonry work. The left section has an openwork structure, as seen in the buildings of machine factories. The middle part of the façade is the stairwell. With the same square recesses as those chosen in the 1980s by the Italian architect Giorgio Grassi for the Public Library on Oude Boteringestraat.

Vibrant area

“In recent years, the pressure on Groningen’s housing market has increased, and with it the demand for new-build apartments. With these 31 apartments, De Kroon fits the bill of home seekers. This is mainly thanks to the wide range of two-, three- and four-bedroom apartments, which appeals to a large group of home seekers. And this prominent location -on the corner of Bloemsingel and Kolendrift- is a vibrant area. With nine storeys, De Kroon is a new landmark that towers above the city of Groningen. Built on the country’s largest single-level car park; one of the entrances is right under apartment building De Kroon. Each apartment has its own parking space. From the apartments, there is a sweeping view of D’Olle Grieze, Ommeland and the historic city centre.”
