Start of construction 81 homes O-kade in Groningen City
News item, Inner-city projects
On Wednesday afternoon, Alderman Philip Broeksma gave the official go-ahead to begin construction on the O-kade project at the Oosterhamrikkade in Groningen. The project comprises 81 owner-occupied homes, spread across two green courtyards, with a mix of apartments, terraced houses, maisonettes and penthouses. Architect Bastiaan Jongerius designed the project. Bouwgroep Dijkstra Draisma is handling the construction. Handover of the homes will begin in late 2027.
The O-kade project in Groningen is located on Oosterhamrikkade, near the vibrant Ebbingekwartier and within walking distance of the city centre.
Alderman Philip Broeksma: “Good news for our city: another 81 homes, in a special location. The bustling trade and industry of the Oosterhamrikkanaal may be a thing of the past, but we’re breathing new life into the waterfront with housing projects like O-kade. I wish the future residents much happiness in their new homes.”
Urban living around two lush courtyards
O-kade features two green courtyards, each with its own unique character. Courtyard 1 includes 20 apartments on Oosterhamrikkade, 5 terraced houses and 6 owner-occupied homes in the affordable housing programme, located on a pedestrian-friendly street. Courtyard 2 offers 40 apartments on Oosterhamrikkade, 5 terraced houses on a pedestrian-friendly street, and 5 more terraced houses situated on the parking deck. The homes vary in size from 52 m² to 166 m².
Miranda Venekamp-Brandt, Director of Marketing, Sales & Rental Operations at VanWonen: “O-kade is located adjacent to the ecological zone along the Oosterhamrikkanaal. The green design of the courtyards complements this perfectly. Excess rainwater will be collected and heat stress will be reduced. We are designing the courtyards in consultation with the future residents. Once they move in, they will be responsible for the maintenance of the greenery. This is how we foster community spirit and social interaction. People will live comfortably here, in a green environment, close to the city centre, with Groningen’s cleanest swimming water right at their doorstep.”
Gorgeous architecture with nods to the past
The project was designed by architect Bastiaan Jongerius and is part of the area’s transformation into a vibrant urban neighbourhood.
Biense Dijkstra, director of Bouwgroep Dijkstra Draisma: “We’re thrilled to be realizing this project with VanWonen. The gorgeous architecture reflects the style of the robust commercial buildings from the canal’s industrial past. It’s another exciting challenge for our expert team.”
