Ground-breaking ceremony for De Havenmeesters van Den Haag
News item, Area and Property Development
On Friday afternoon, 27 March, The Hague’s alderman Klaas Verschuure and deputy Anne Koning of the South Holland Provincial Executive, together with Haag Wonen, Achmea Real Estate and VanWonen, gave the official go-ahead for the construction of the De Havenmeesters van Den Haag project. Two striking residential towers will soon house 242 affordable apartments and a compact car park. The project marks a concrete step towards reducing the housing shortage in The Hague. The complex is scheduled for handover in the first half of 2028.
Construction officially kicked off Friday afternoon with the festive placement of a concrete lift core. Klaas Verschuure, alderman for Urban Development, said: “Housing is on the rise here, literally. That is fantastic news for everyone searching for a new home, no matter their budget. In The Hague, we build wherever possible, with due regard for the surrounding area. With this striking tower in such a unique part of the harbour, we aren’t just offering new perspectives, but above all, a magnificent view.”
Landmark on the Neherkade
At a prominent location on the corner of Petroleumhaven-Oost in Laakhaven, The Hague, De Havenmeesters van Den Haag will arise – a striking pair of residential towers. The two residential towers sit atop a four-story car park featuring a rooftop garden for residents. The taller tower, distinguished by its dark crown, is set to become an eye-catching landmark on the Neherkade. The architecture refers to the industrial past of the location. With entrances on the harbour square and at the intersection of Vierlinghkade and Neherkade, along with a communal meeting space for residents, De Havenmeesters adds a fresh, vibrant layer to this part of the city.
Affordable housing
The taller residential tower (70 metres) will accommodate 147 social housing units for Haag Wonen, intended for low-income households who struggle to find suitable housing in The Hague. Mohamed Baba, chairman of the board of housing association Haag Wonen: “With De Havenmeesters, we are adding 147 comfortable, low-energy and affordable rental homes to The Hague. We are proud of these homes and their role in tackling the housing shortage in The Hague. The building will also have a communal space that we will design in consultation with the future residents. Our goal is to not just build homes, but to help build a community where people can meet and socialise.”
Deputy Anne Koning is also happy that construction can start now: “Everyone deserves a pleasant and affordable home. Demand is high, so the province is helping municipalities with the housing construction task. This project received a subsidy of 900,000 euros.”
The lower residential tower (50 metres) and the ground floor on the waterfront will accommodate 95 mid-range rental units. Achmea Real Estate will add these homes to its portfolio on behalf of one of its institutional clients. The project, developed by VanWonen, plays a key role in the thorough transformation of the Petroleumhaven into a dynamic mixed-use district. Situated on the waterfront, the site is close to the city centre and offers excellent public transport links.
It is not yet possible to register for the rental homes. The social homes will become available via Woningnet Haaglanden shortly before their completion. Registration for the mid-priced rental apartments will begin approximately six months prior to their completion.
