Start of construction first homes in Nijmegen’s De Waalhoven district

News item, Area and Property Development

With a festive ceremony, construction began yesterday on Spiegelhof, part of the De Waalhoven area development in Nijmegen-Noord. Alderman Noël Vergunst performed the ground-breaking ceremony together with representatives of VOF De Waalhoven – a partnership between VanWonen and BPD | Bouwfonds Gebiedsontwikkeling – and future residents. During the festive afternoon, the future residents met each other for the first time.

Designed by the architects of the firms Baljon and KCAP, Spiegelhof reflects the eco-friendly, community-focused spirit of the De Waalhoven district, which is set to grow to more than 600 homes. Reinbouw has been contracted to build these first 85 homes. Spiegelhof offers a mix of apartments, penthouses and townhouses, all gathered around a communal courtyard with at its centre a green garden.

Alderman Noël Vergunst: “In Nijmegen, we are working toward a 15-minute city (in Dutch: ‘nabije stad’), with housing, work, amenities, green spaces and opportunities for social interaction close together. We are thrilled that with Spiegelhof, we can finally begin the development of De Waalhoven. This aligns with our ambition to combine urban growth with a pleasant, liveable, and well-connected city, with future-proof residential areas in Nijmegen-Noord.”

Arjen Kleijer, on behalf of the executive board of VOF De Waalhoven: “With Spiegelhof, we are creating a compact, nature-inclusive neighbourhood in the beautiful river landscape along the Waal. A neighbourhood built on social interaction and community spirit. The communal courtyard garden and the layout of the development encourage contact between residents from day one. The fact that future residents are already meeting each other today perfectly reflects the character of this new living environment.”

Spiegelhof in De Waalhoven
Spiegelhof is part of De Waalhoven in Nijmegen-Noord and consists of a contemporary neighbourhood built around a collective courtyard. Designed with sustainability and connection in mind, the development fosters social cohesion and meaningful encounters between neighbours. The architecture offers a subtle nod to the area’s historic dike landscape, combined with modern, energy-efficient homes in lush, green surroundings.

De Waalhoven is being developed in Nijmegen-Noord in a unique location along the river Waal. The area development combines the landscape’s historic roots with modern residential standards. The neighbourhood is designed to be green, sustainable and community-oriented, with a strong focus on climate adaptation, biodiversity and social connection.
