Start of construction celebration 35 homes ‘Thuis in de Zeilen’ in Meerstad

The construction of the Thuis in de Zeilen project in Meerstad was festively kicked off on Tuesday afternoon, 15 April, with the future residents present. The plan consists of 35 sustainable owner-occupied homes. The design is by De Unie Architecten, while VDM Woningen is responsible for the realisation. All homes have been sold and the handover is planned for 2026.

To mark the start of construction, Jelle Dijkstra (Bureau Meerstad), Rob Dijkman (VanWonen), and Arjen Moes (VDM Woningen) wrote a greeting card for the future residents. Dijkstra congratulated the new residents: “De Zeilen in Meerstad is taking shape. It’s lovely that dozens of new residents have once again found a new home in Meerstad, in this water-rich and green area. I wish all the home buyers much happiness in Meerstad.”

De Zeilen
Neighbourhood De Zeilen is located in the northeast of Meerstad. De Zeilen includes islands in the Woldmeer, tree-lined avenues, and a diverse landscape of open and wooded spaces. The residential character is unique: it feels both expansive and spacious, yet also intimate and like a village. De Zeilen is framed by the Groningen landscape. This water-rich neighbourhood will feature over 600 homes in total, comprising island plots, terraced houses, social housing, apartments and more. In addition to the 35 owner-occupied houses, VanWonen is developing 38 social rental apartments for housing association Nijestee.

Rob Dijkman, Project Developer at VanWonen: “A home in De Zeilen means living near the water or on the waterfront. The neighbourhood is located between the lock system and the Harksteder Broeklanden nature reserve. With this project, we are offering a diverse range of housing options: terraced houses, semi-detached houses and one detached house. All 35 houses feature a garden, with several of them bordering directly onto the water. So wherever you live, you will always have a view of water and greenery. This will be a wonderful and comfortable place to live.”

Varied streetscape
Thuis in de Zeilen offers a richly varied streetscape, creating an urban vibe on the inland lake. “Our team of skilled people is proud to bring this characterful living environment with its beautiful architecture to fruition. All homes will have lovely details and accents in a wide range of variations, making each home unique,” adds Arjan Moes, Director of VDM Woningen. “What’s more, we are building bio-based with timber frame construction, an environmentally friendly way of building that perfectly aligns with the sustainable ambitions of this project.”
