Start of construction celebration De Tuinkamer project in Meppel
News item, Area and Property Development
Construction has officially begun on the new Meppel residential area De Tuinkamer (The Garden Room), following a ceremony Wednesday afternoon led by Alderman Robin van Ulzen, area developer VanWonen and Schutte Bouw. The project comprises a total of 102 zero-energy homes, located in the Parkwonen 3/4/5 sub-area in the Nieuwveense Landen district. There are still homes available, ranging from semi-detached and three-in-a-row houses to spacious detached houses. The first homes are scheduled for handover in the second quarter of 2026.
During a festive ceremony, Alderman Robin van Ulzen gave the official go-ahead for the construction, assisted by André ten Vergert (VanWonen) and Paul Dijkman (Schutte Bouw & Ontwikkeling). After the exciting kick-off of the start of construction, the future residents had the opportunity to get to know each other and share their first experiences.
Alderman Robin van Ulzen congratulated the future residents on their new homes: “It’s very good news for Meppel that construction has begun on De Tuinkamer in Parkwonen 3/4/5. The plan stands out with its green and spacious design and wide variety of homes. There are homes for both first-time home buyers and people moving up on the housing ladder. This means comfortable, countryside living in Meppel is now within reach for a broad range of people.”
VanWonen director André ten Vergert: “The De Tuinkamer development is fully underway with both the Northern (phases 2 and 3) and Southern section (phase 1). We are building a total of 102 owner-occupied homes. The new residents will get to enjoy living in a sustainable home, in a beautiful, peaceful, and green rural setting, with the lively centre and excellent amenities of Meppel within easy reach.”
Living in a landscaped park
The homes in De Tuinkamer are situated within a high-quality landscaped park. The layout of the urban plan is based on the historical structures in villages in Drenthe. In the old days, houses in the village centres were often clustered around a ‘brink’, a central green. But many villages also stretched out along a road, like ribbons on the landscape. These are known as ribbon villages. In De Tuinkamer, the gardens of the houses naturally connect to the landscaped park. The plan only features natural property boundaries, such as green hedges. This is how VanWonen realises rural living in Nieuwveense Landen, in partnership with wUrck architectuur stedenbouw en landschap.
Paul Dijkman, director of Schutte Bouw: “It’s great that we have started construction of the entire plan. With its really beautiful architecture, this is going to be a very pleasant and child-friendly residential neighbourhood in a green environment. I’m proud that we get to bring this project to life with our skilled people.”
The handover of the first homes is planned for the second quarter of 2026. There are still homes available. More information: www.detuinkamermeppel.nl.
