Seahorse
Hengelo

Back to projects

For many years, the Royal Textiles Factory (KWF) in Hengelo manufactured bath and household textiles. Seahorse was one of the factory’s well-known brand names the area now derives its name from. The rich industrial past forms the basis of a new, characteristic and green residential area.

Some of the saw-tooth roofs, characteristic of the industrial architecture, will be preserved. They give this district its unique character. Within the existing urban area, we are developing a flexible mix of housing.

The diversity is optimal, with a variety of home types. Some of these will be hybrid homes; their layout can still be fully adapted to the preferences of the residents. Under the old monumental saw-tooth roofs, loft style homes will be built. There will also be new builds with a saw-tooth roof. Old and new will thus come together. The architecture of the project is a nod towards the industrial past of the location. This will also be visible in the details of the design. Robust materials for the brickwork and doors, and elegant window frames, lend an industrial look to the 95 houses and 15 apartments.
